Profile
I received my Ph.D. in cultural and linguistic anthropology from Duke University in 1997 (after having received a graduate degree in physics from Russia). My interests and areas of expertise include Soviet history and the processes of post-socialist transformation in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe; political institutions and ideologies in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia; political philosophy and language philosophy; the interface between language/discourse and power; comparative studies of communism and capitalism anthropology of media; visual anthropology; experimental artistic scenes (especially, Russia and US); urban geography and anthropology of space. My book, Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More: The Last Soviet Generation, Princeton University Press, 2005 – http://www.amazon.com/Everything-Was-Forever-Until-More/dp/0691121176/ref=ed_oe_p/102-1018807-3880106, asks the question: what was it about life during the period I call “late socialism” (1950s-1980s) that made the collapse of the Soviet Union so unexpected to most insiders and outsiders. The book received the 2007 AAASS prize “for the most important contribution to Russian, Eurasian, and East European studies in any discipline of the humanities or social sciences.” Reviews of the book: PDF (English) and PDF (Russian). I am also preparing three new book projects:
The first book (currently in the write-up stage) analyzes the relationship between the task of preserving Lenin’s body in the Mausoleum in Moscow, the concept of “Leninist sovereignty,” and a peculiar biomedical science that developed around this project. The manuscript is based on archival research in Moscow party archives and ethnographic research among scientists who have been maintaining Lenin’s body for decades.
The second book project (research stage) focuses on the experimental artistic milieus that developed in St Petersburg and Moscow around the time of the Soviet collapse (early 1980s to late 1990s), focusing on such artists as the Necrorealists, Sergei Kuryokhin, the New Academy artists, Oleg Kulik, AVIA, etc.
The third book project (research stage), prepared together with Melanie Feakins, analyzes the transformations of urban space and time in post-socialist St Petersburg, focusing on the sites of “global architecture” and the political confrontation and mobilization associated with them, and on the transformations of private, public, and mixed forms of space and time in the context where socialist and capitalist spatial and temporal arrangements collide.
