Recent PhDs and placements
Berkeley graduates can be found teaching and working throughout the world, and in many different kinds of institutions in the United States. About 43% of doctoral recipients in Anthropology and Medical Anthropology between 2003 and 2008 are now in tenure-track teaching appointments at research universities and colleges. A substantial number of Medical Anthropology PhDs and anthropological archaeology PhDs went into full-time research careers, and overall, 10% of these PhDs are now in permanent research positions. Another 10% of these recent graduates moved on to appointments as postdoctoral scholars conducting continued research, writing, and in some cases, teaching, appointments that often are followed by tenure-track jobs at universities. This is also a common career trajectory for students like the 15% of recent graduates who are currently in temporary teaching appointments. While these are the most common career choices, another 15% of recent doctorates from the program pursued more diverse careers, in museums, in academic administration, in publishing, marketing, and even law school.
